Nestled between the Arizona mountain ranges, Tucson is a city with a diverse array of attractions for visitors to explore. There's a bustling nightlife to experience, natural local wonders and some amazing views to be found of the surrounding desert. Founded in 1967, Reid Park Zoo is home to more than 250 species of animals and offers a great way to relax and unwind when in Tucson. You can see everything from lemurs to elephants, with kids especially welcome. Amazing events are hosted throughout the year where guests are invited to get up close and personal with the zoo's inhabitants, while workshops are regularly held to showcase ongoing conservation efforts.
Just over an hour's drive south-east of Tucson is Tombstone, a city famed for its Wild West history. Perhaps the most famous attraction of the city is the OK Corral, scene of the famous shoot-out in 1881 between the Earp and Clanton gangs. Today, it's been transformed into an open-air theater, with live reenactments held every day. Other attractions of the city include the Boothill Graveyard, and the Bird Cage Theater.
Saguaro West National Park is just a 25-minute drive west from Tucson and offers a glimpse of the wild, desert climate of Arizona. You can explore the area via a selection of hiking trails, with sights to see including Gould Mine, Signal Hill and Valley View; this last trail offers visitors the treat of an impressive viewpoint over the rocky hills and saguaro-covered plains. There's also a surprising diversity of life to be found here, with around 30 species of cacti growing wild in the area.
The state capital of Arizona is just a short drive north-east of the city, so jump in your Tucson car rental and you can arrive in Phoenix in just under two hours. The city is known for its high-end spa resorts, amazing views from Camelback Mountain, and an array of cultural attractions. This includes a host of museums, including the Musical Instrument Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, Wells Fargo Museum and the Rosson House Museum, among others.
