Fresno is California's fifth-largest city and an ideal destination for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger locations along the state's Pacific Coast. Located in the center of the state in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, Fresno remains an agricultural community, and as such offers a wide range of outdoor pursuits. It's also in easy reach of three of the US' most famous National Parks - Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia - which make ideal destinations for anyone picking up a rented car at Fresno Airport.
One of the city's more unusual attractions, the Forestiere Underground Gardens were the life's passion of Italian-American immigrant Baldassare Forestiere. He started work on the gardens in 1906 to escape Fresno's summer heat and devoted the next 40 years to the creation of the vast underground network of gardens, grottos and catacombs, where you can find a range of fruit trees.
The nightlife hub of Fresno, the Tower District is just north of downtown and is an oasis of neon lights in the otherwise quiet city. Centered around the historic Tower Theater, the area offers a vibrant range of restaurants, art galleries, live shows and boutique shopping, and is also a hub for community events, with many of Fresno's annual festivals calling the district home.
Spanning 300 acres along the banks of the San Joaquin River, Woodward Park is Fresno's largest green space and offers something for everyone. It has five miles of trails to explore, taking you through cherry trees, ponds and the Shinzen Japanese Garden, where you can find an authentic teahouse and the Double Moon Bridge, which looks out over a pond filled with colorful koi.
For many visitors, the first thing to do after picking up a car rental in Fresno will be to head to the famous Yosemite National Park. Around an hour and a half's drive north of the city along the CA-41 highway, the park is centered around the spectacular Yosemite Valley, known for its high granite peaks such as the imposing El Capitan. Elsewhere in the park, you'll come across grand waterfalls, ancient sequoia trees and vast areas of unspoiled wilderness.
Fresno sits in the heart of California's Central Valley, so is a great base from which to explore what this region has to offer. Renting a car in Fresno lets you take a scenic road trip along Highway 99, which runs for 250 miles all the way down the spine of the valley, with Fresno right in the middle. Go north to discover Lodi's wine country and its famous Zinfandels, or head south to explore the historic town of Visalia and its renowned farmer's market.
For those looking further afield, California's Pacific coast lies around two-and-a-half to three hours west along CA-152. While spots like San Francisco and Big Sur are just about within reach for a long day trip, the city of Monterey offers great beaches, scenic coastal roads, and the chance to explore California's Spanish history. It's also great for sports, whether you want to surf the waves of Monterey Bay or play a sedate round at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
An SUV will be ideal if you're heading into one of the many national parks and forests near Fresno.
